FDTC Hosts Nationally Known Musicians For Annual Foundation Gala
Florence-Darlington Technical College will host nationally known performers Jay Ungar and Molly Mason for its' annual Educational Foundation Gala, Thursday, April 27, 2006, at the Florence Civic Center. Jay and Molly will help FDTC celebrate its 42nd birthday.
Jay and Molly are husband and wife acoustic musicians who performed the stirring "Ashokan Farewell" as the theme to the Emmy Award winning documentary, "Ken Burns', The Civil War."
Since joining forces in the late 1970s, Jay and Molly have become one of the most celebrated duos on the American acoustic music scene. Their performance of Jay's haunting composition for the PBS series earned the couple international acclaim.
"Ashokan Farewell" was written by Jay Ungar and became the musical hallmark of the "The Civil War". The series' soundtrack won a Grammy and was nominated for an Emmy. Documentarian Ken Burns has used their compositions in a host of other films.
Jay and Molly also performed music for the documentary, "Brother's Keeper" and the theatrical release of "Legends of the Fall."
The couple has also performed on PBS broadcasts of "Great Performances" and "A Prairie Home Companion." Jay and Molly are also known for making their live performances a musical journey that can span two continents and two centuries with wit and consummate musicianship. They incorporate classic Appalachian, Cajun and Celtic fiddle tunes with Civil War classics, Swing era greats, waltzes and original compositions into their acoustic concerts.
Jay and Molly's performance at FDTC's Gala is black-tie optional. The evening begins at 6:00 p.m. with the President's Reception, Thursday, April 27, 2006, at the Florence Civic Center. The dinner and program begin at 7:00 p.m.
