Occupation Description

Image of FDTC billboard As an electrical technician you will solve practical problems associated with installing, diagnosing, modifying, repairing and maintaining buildings, industrial machinery, electrical systems and mechanical equipment. Your job assignments will have variety; you will discuss operations with various persons, work throughout the facility and will be more self-directed in completing your assignment.

Employment Opportunities

Jobs requiring a post-high school degree are projected to grow 32 percent over the 2000-2010 periods, faster than any other category.

Overall employment within the industrial machinery installation, repair, and maintenance area is projected to have a positive increase for all occupations through 2010. Nevertheless, applicants with broad skills in machine repair should have favorable job prospects. As more firms introduce automated production equipment, industrial machinery installation, repair, and maintenance workers will be needed to ensure that these machines are properly maintained and consistently in operation.

Earnings and Advancement

Earnings of junior electrical/electronics technicians vary by industry and geographic region starting at $11 per hour. Electrical/Electronics technicians with more experience may earn over $26 per hour.

Unlike many other occupations concentrated in manufacturing industries, electrical/electronics technicians usually are not affected by seasonal changes in production.
