Florence-Darlington Technical College’s class of 2019 will welcome Florence County Sheriff’s Office Major Mike M. Nunn as the commencement speaker on Thursday, May 16 at the Florence Center. The commencement ceremony will get underway at 6:30 p.m.
Maj. Nunn is the General Counsel and Public Information Officer with the department. Originally from Columbia, South Carolina, he became a reserve deputy with the Florence County Sheriff’s Office in 2006. In 2009, he left his private practice as a lawyer to accept his current position.
Maj. Nunn is a graduate of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy as a Class I law enforcement officer. He is involved in many aspects of the Sheriff’s Office including patrol, criminal enforcement, investigations, narcotics, dignitary protection and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT).
He is a member of the National Criminal Enforcement Association and a featured writer for its nationally publicized magazine Criminal Enforcement. A frequent speaker and lecturer on topics effecting law enforcement, he is also a NRA Certified Firearms Instructor and SLED and Utah Certified Concealed Weapons Permit (CWP) Instructor.
The Maj. earned his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of South Carolina. He was a senior litigator at Aiken Bridges Attorneys at Law in Florence for 27 years. Maj. Nunn’s primary practice focus was medical malpractice, products liability and governmental tort liability defense. He is a former Fellow of the American Board of Trial Advocates, the minimum requirement of which is to be lead counsel in at least 100 jury trials.
Maj. Nunn was a passenger on the historical US Airways Flight 1549 on January 15, 2009, known as the “Miracle on the Hudson”. The fateful flight took off from New York City on its way to Charlotte. Birds struck both engines just after takeoff and forced pilot, Captain Chelsey “Sully” Sullenberger, to land in the Hudson River. Everyone survived.
Maj. Nunn resides in Florence with his wife of 38 years, Lee. Both are active members of First Presbyterian Church in Florence, where Maj. Nunn serves as an Elder and former Clerk of the Session. Mr. and Mrs. Nunn have two sons, Weston and Mills, the latter of whom is a 2018 graduate of Florence-Darlington Technical College’s Machine Tool Technology program.
