FDTC To Host 22nd Annual Math Competition At SiMT

Florence-Darlington Technical College will host a dozen top high school math teams for the 22nd annual Technical Mathematics Competition at the Southeastern Institute of Manufacturing and Technology (SiMT) on Friday, March 16, 2018. West Florence High School’s team will look to defend their title after winning last year’s competition.

Each school has four team members, who will pit their brains against each other for cash prizes and bragging rights. The winning school will also get a trophy that they will take with them back to their school.

Scheduled to compete are high school teams from FDTC’s service area of Darlington, Florence and Marion counties:  Creek Bridge, Emmanuel Christian, Hannah-Pamplico, Hartsville, Johnsonville, Marion, Mayo, Mullins, South Florence, Trinity-Byrnes Collegiate School, West Florence, and Wilson.

The contest starts at 8:30 a.m. and ends after a lunch for the teams with an awards ceremony at 1:00 p.m. FDTC’s Educational Foundation is sponsoring the competition and will award the first place team $1,500.

The problems feature real world math questions submitted by local industries and businesses. Students will be allowed to use a scientific calculator to work on the more sophisticated problems. Each problem will be timed.
