
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 20, 2019) – In the top of the fifth inning on Wednesday during the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, Damond Nixon knocked a homerun, scoring three runs and solidifying the Tech Stingers’ 13-11 win over Mercer County.
Damond had a 3-1 count when he hit the homerun. Prior to the at-bat, the Tech Stingers were trailing Mercer County 5-3. Following Nixon’s homerun, the score was 6-5. In the sixth inning, the Tech Stingers scored four runs, while Mercer County only scored three. Both teams scored three runs in the seventh and final inning as the Tech Stingers wrapped up their 21st win of the season.
Elian Almanzar won the game on the mound as he pitched for 4.2 innings. Almanzar struck out two batters, walked a batter and allowed nine hits. Nathan Barolet earned the save by getting the final two outs of the game.
The Tech Stingers accumulated 13 hits throughout the game. Ryan Moore led the way at the plate as he was 3-for-3 with two walks, a double, three runs and three RBI. Michael Elijah, Mark Engel and Danny Grillo had two hits each. Patrick Baggett, Edward Landron, Alex Stennett and Nixon each had a hit.
The team now has a winning record of 21-8.
On Thursday, March 21, the Tech Stingers will host Fulton-Montgomery at Old Cormell Field. The doubleheader will get underway at 3:30 p.m.
