Florence’s Wilson High School successfully defended its technical math championship by winning the 20th FDTC Technical Mathematics Competition, Friday, March 18, 2016 at the Southeastern Institute of Manufacturing and Technology. Wilson’s five-person team competed against 11 other high schools from Florence, Darlington and Marion counties. Wilson’s team also won the 2015 contest.
The Wilson High Tigers' math team pockets the $1,500 grand prize. Marion Swamp Foxes’ team takes second and a $1,000 prize. Hartsville Red Foxes' squad finishes third, taking home $500.
FDTC math instructor Cindy Rallings says the high school teams enjoy the challenge of a technical math match because the problems require teamwork. She said, “Our problems resemble what the students are going to face in the real world.”
The morning long event was sponsored by the FDTC Educational Foundation and the South Carolina Advanced Technological Education Incorporated Center of Excellence.
