Stingers Sweep Season Opening Games at New Field

FLORENCE, S.C. (February 10, 2020) – The Florence-Darlington Technical College Stingers opened its 2020 season by sweeping the first week of the Stinger Invitational at the team’s new field located on-campus.

History was made on Friday, when the Tech Stingers won the first-ever game played at the new field. The Tech Stingers dominated to defeat Roane St. 8-1 in seven innings. Jeramaine Vanheyningen was the winning pitcher on the mound as he pitched for three innings, striking out three batters. Vanheyningen allowed zero hits, runs and walks. The historic game kicked off with Hunter Baker hitting a homerun in the Stingers’ first at-bat. Daniel Gueldner was 2-for-4 with a triple and 2 RBI. Cameron Dean was 1-for-2 with a double, a walk and 2 runs. Chandler Woolridge hit a single and had 2 runs.

Saturday’s morning game was played much differently as the Stingers shutout Patrick Henry 1-0. Pitchers, Hunter Parks, Nathan Barolet and Josh Patterson contributed to the shutout on the mound. Barolet was awarded the win with two strikeouts. In the batter’s box, Tech Stingers, Charlie Corum, Gueldner and DJ Sullivan each had a hit.

On Saturday afternoon, the Stingers won another game in shutout fashion with a 8-0 victory over Roane St. Collin Welch was awarded the victory. He lasted four innings, striking out three batters and allowing a hit and a walk. Pitchers, Timmy Felder and Drake Thomas contributed to the shutout as well. Catcher, Danny Grillo hit the Stinger’s only home run in the game during the fourth inning. Jacob English was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and a run. Edward Landron, Josearmando DiazAndre Demetral and Trey Yates each had a hit.

The Tech Stinger’s final game of the weekend was held on Sunday. The team defeated Patrick Henry 10-6. Patrick Henry began the game with three runs in the top of the first, but the Tech Stingers answered back with 7 runs in the bottom of the inning. The Tech Stingers held the lead throughout the entire game. Baker led the team at the plate being 2-for-3 with 2 RBI, 2 runs and a walk. Justin Hanvey, Corum and Yates had a hit.

The homes games kicked off the Tech Stinger’s 2020 season, so the team is 4-0.

Week No. 2 of the Stinger Invitational will be held this weekend on FDTC’s campus. On Friday, the Tech Stingers will play East Georgia St. at 3 p.m. Saturday’s game will also be held at 3 p.m. as the Tech Stingers will play Walters St. The Tech Stingers will host Walters St. again on Sunday for the final matchup in the second week of the Stinger Invitational.
