
FLORENCE, S.C. (February 11, 2019) – The Florence-Darlington Technical College Stingers traveled to Palatka, Florida, Friday through Sunday to compete in the Capital City Bank Classic. The Tech Stingers lost to Northwest Florida State 10-6, beat Broward 13-7, lost 7-2 to Gulf Coast State and defeated St. Johns River State 12-11 in an extra inning.
In the 10-6 loss to Northwest Florida State on Friday, Will Abbott suffered the loss on the mound. He struck out five batters and allowed nine hits and a walk. Hunter Baker hit the Stingers’ only homerun in the fifth inning. Baker who had four RBI and Mark Engel each had two hits in four at bats. Patrick Baggett had a hit as well.
The Tech Stingers opened Saturday with a 13-7 win over Broward. Peyton Evans won the game on the mound with only two runs and four hits allowed. Grant Bodison led the way at the plate, as he was 3-for-3 with two runs and four RBI. Edward Landron was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Engel knocked a homerun in the fifth inning. He finished out the game 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.
Jermaine Vanheyningen took the loss on the mound as the Tech Stingers fell 7-2 on Saturday night to Gulf Coast State. Vanheyningen struck out two batters and allowed three hits. Baker, Alex Stennett and Michael Elijah each had a hit.
On Sunday, the Tech Stingers won in extra innings as they defeated St. Johns River State 12-11. Engel knocked the single in the 10th inning that brought home the eventual winning run for the Tech Stingers. He was 3-for-6 at the plate throughout the game. Boyce Kobleur won on the mound, striking out two batters and only allowing a hit and a walk. Baker was 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs and two RBI. Baggett was 2-for-6 with an RBI.
On Saturday, February 16, the Tech Stingers will host Patrick Henry Community College at Old Cormell Field in a doubleheader that will begin at 2 p.m. The Tech Stingers will host Patrick Henry Community College again on Sunday, February 17 at 12 p.m.
