
FLORENCE, S.C. (April 22, 2019) – The Florence-Darlington Technical College Stingers split games on Saturday as they hosted USC Union in this year’s final home games at Old Cormell Field. The Tech Stingers lost the first game 3-2 but rallied back to win 8-5 in the second game of the doubleheader.
In the 3-2 loss, the Tech Stingers jumped out to an early lead thanks to a single by Patrick Baggett that brought in a run. USC Union tied the game in the fifth inning and took the lead in the six.
Daniel Rutherford suffered the loss on the mound. He pitched for 5.1 innings, striking out three batters and allowing two hits and two runs. Baggett led the way at the plate, as he was 2-for-3 with one RBI. Michael Elijah, Cameron Dean, Mark Engel and Hunter Baker each had a hit.
USC Union took a 4-0 lead early in the second game; however, the Tech Stingers scored six unanswered runs between the fourth and fifth innings. USC Union scored one more run, but the Tech Stingers tacked on two more in the bottom of the six inning.
Will Abbott won the game on the mound. Over the course of four innings, he allowed only two hits and a run. Engel and Alex Stennett led the way at the plate, as they were both 2-for-4. Ryan Moore, Dean, Baker and Chase Galloway had a hit apiece as well.
The Tech Stingers are 36-12 overall and 14-6 in Region 10.
On Tuesday, April 23, the Tech Stingers will travel to Fayetteville, North Carolina to play Fayetteville Tech in a doubleheader that will begin at 4 p.m.
