Stingers Top FMU JV Patriots at Sparrow Stadium

FLORENCE, S.C. (February 27, 2019) – In a doubleheader at Sparrow Stadium on Tuesday, the Florence-Darlington Technical College Stingers beat the Francis Marion University (FMU) JV Patriots in a double-header, 10-2 and 9-4.

The Tech Stingers took the lead 2-1 early in the first inning of the opening game on Tuesday. FMU JV was held to only two runs and three hits throughout the game as the Tech Stingers tacked on a run in the third inning, four runs in the sixth and three runs in the seventh.

Elian Almanzar won the game on the mound as he pitched for four innings. He struck out five batters. In relief, Nat Turner and Jamil Vanheyningen helped close out the game.

Sophomore Michael Elijah led the Tech Stingers at the plate as he went 3-for-4. In the seventh inning, Mark Engel knocked a homerun. Engel earned three RBI and two runs. Edward Landron, Alex Stennett, Billy Flohr and Daniel Rutherford each had a hit in the 10-2 win.

In Game No. 2, the Tech Stingers took another early lead. This time, they led 3-0 in the second inning; however, FMU tied the game in the third. The Tech Stingers scored a run in the fourth as well as four runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh. FMU JV scored one more run in the seventh. The Tech Stingers went on to win 9-4.

Cameron Clark won on the mound as he pitched for an inning. He allowed one hit and struck out a batter. Six other Tech Stinger pitchers saw time on the mound. Nathan Barolet earned the save after throwing the final 1.2 innings.

Twelve hits were amassed throughout the game for the Tech Stingers. Patrick Baggett, Cameron Dean, Grant Bodison, Engel and Chase Galloway had two hits. Elijah and Hunter Baker had a hit apiece as well.

The Tech Stingers are now 11-4 this season.

Up next on the schedule is a two-day, doubleheader, as Monroe College will visit the Tech Stingers at Old Cormell Field. On Saturday and Sunday, March 2-3, games will be played at 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
