Tech Stingers Defeat No. 8 Brunswick With Walk-Off

FLORENCE, S.C. (April 11, 2019) – The Florence-Darlington Technical College Stingers defeated national ranked No. 8 Brunswick 12-11 in the bottom of the ninth inning on Wednesday at Old Cormell Field thanks to a walk-off single by Alex Stennett.

Stennett hit the single on a 0-1 count, breaking the tied score of 11-11 to the winning 12th run. The win marked the 34th victory of the season for the Tech Stingers who also lead Region 10 13-3.

Jay McKenzie was the winning pitcher on the mound for the Tech Stingers. McKenzie pitched for an inning, striking out a batter, walking a batter and only allowing a hit. No runs were scored while McKenzie was on the mound.

The Tech Stingers opened the matchup with five runs scored in the first inning, but Brunswick quickly closed the gap after scoring three runs in the top of the second inning. By the end of the third inning, the game was tied 7-7. In the fifth, the game was 8-8, and in the six, it was 9-9. Brunswick jumped out to a two-run lead in the seventh, and the Tech Stingers were only able to answer back with one run in the eighth until a scored run and the game winning knock in the ninth.

Throughout the game, the Tech Stingers amassed 16 hits. Baggett led the way at the plate after going 4-for-4 with a double a RBI and four runs. Ryan Moore who recently signed to play for Francis Marion University in 2020, along with Ceejay Belton and Cameron Dean had two hits each. Michael Elijah, Grant Bodison, Mark Engel, Stennett and Damond Nixon had a hit as well.

On Saturday and Sunday, April 13-14, the Tech Stingers will travel to Spartanburg, South Carolina to play Spartanburg Methodist in a four-game series. The two conference doubleheaders will get underway at 1 p.m. both days.
