
FLORENCE, S.C. (March 5, 2018) – The Florence-Darlington Technical College Stingers defeated DII No. 6 ranked Pitt Community College in three of four games held at Old Cormell Field on Saturday and Sunday.
In the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday, the Tech Stingers won 7-3 in seven innings. Josh Price of Dillon, South Carolina earned the win in relief, pitching two innings and striking out two batters. Price only allowed two hits and a walk.
Tanner Mann led the Stingers at the plate by going 3-3 with two runs and earning two runs batted in. Dax Roper and Conway’s Reid Hardwick had two hits each. Gabe Austin and Rafi Vazquez both hit solo homeruns.
In Game No. 2 on Saturday, the Tech Stingers lost 8-6. Vazquez suffered the loss. Once again, Roper led the team at the plate. He was 3-4 with a run and four runs batted in. Tanner Mann and Cross Holfert each had two hits. Florence’s Grayson Cottingham had two runs batted in.
On Sunday, the Tech Stingers won 14-11 in the first game of the doubleheader. The Tech Stingers were down 8-1 in the third inning, but they made a miraculous comeback to capture the victory. Ryan Smith pitched two innings in relief to earn his first victory. Sumter’s Tradd James pitched the final two innings to earn the save.
Holfert was 4-5 with two runs scored. Vazquez was 3-4 with two runs scored and four runs batted in. Josh Gregory, Harrison Hawkins of Bishopville, Cottingham and Roper all had two runs batted in. Hardwick scored three runs as well.
The Tech Stingers won the final game of the weekend on Sunday 6-2. Mullins’ Weston Rogers carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning until Pitt was finally able to get their first hit and run. Rogers earned the victory with nine strikeouts and only allowing three hits, one walk and two errors.
Austin was 1-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Hawkins added two hits.
Through the first 19 games of the season, the Tech Stingers are now 13-6.
The Tech Stingers will host Mercyhurst North East at Old Cormell Field on Friday, March 9 at 1:30 p.m. Between Saturday, March 10 and Sunday, March 11, the Tech Stingers will host Cuyahoga in two doubleheaders. Saturday’s games begin at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., and Sunday’s games will get underway at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
