
FLORENCE, S.C. (March 12, 2018) – The Florence-Darlington Technical College Stingers won four of five games this past weekend, defeating Mercyhurst North East and Cuyahoga at Old Cormell Field.
On Friday, the Stingers defeated Mercyhurst North East 20-0 in a dominating performance at home. Dillon’s Josh Price earned the victory as he pitched for four innings. Price struck out five batters and only allowed four hits while on the mound.
Michael Elijah led the way for the Stingers at the plate. Elijah was 4-5, including a homerun, four runs and five runs batted in. Josh Gregory was 3-4 with two runs and three runs batted in. Florence’s Ed’Zaviah Paul was 2-3 with two runs and four runs batted in. Jackson Williams of Latta, Tanner Mann and Connor Pett each had two hits. Rafi Vazquez added a homerun as well.
The Stingers lost their opening game on Saturday as they fell to Cuyahoga 12-8. Mark Leonard suffered the loss on the mound.
Vazquez was 2-4 with a homerun. Elijah was 2-4 with one run and two runs batted in. Florence’s Grayson Cottingham had a homerun in the game.
Despite losing the opening game of the series, the Stingers beat Cuyahoga 6-0 in the second game on Saturday. Mullins’ Weston Rogers earned the win with a complete game. Rogers struck out seven batters and only allowed four hits.
Bishopville’s Harrison Hawkins led the Stingers in batting as he was 3-4 with a run. Elijah added two hits, and Gabe Austin added two runs batted in. Adam Spurlin hit a two-run homerun during the team’s winning effort on Saturday.
The Stingers hosted Cuyahoga on Sunday as well. During the first game of the doubleheader, the Stingers won 9-2. Evan Odum earned a complete game as he struck out 10 batters. Odum also only allowed four hits and two runs scored while he was on the mound.
Dax Roper was 2-3 with two homeruns and four runs batted in. Gregory was 3-4 with one run and two runs batted in. Austin hit a homerun during the winning effort. Elijah and Spurlin added two runs.
In the final game of the weekend on Sunday, the Stingers defeated Cuyahoga 10-0. Tanner Myatt earned the win with a complete game. Myatt struck out six batters and allowed three hits.
Vazquez was 3-3 with a run and three runs batted in. Austin was 2-2 with three runs. Hawkins had two runs batted in, and Gregory scored two runs.
The Stingers are now 17-7 as they improve their winning record.
On Wednesday, March 14, the baseball team will compete in the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach as they will play against the 2017 DII JUCO national runner, Mercer County at 2 p.m. and County College of Morris at 4:30 p.m. The Stingers will travel to Union, South Carolina on Saturday, March 17 to play USC Union at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. On Sunday, March 18, the Stingers will play USC Union at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
