Tech Stingers Scrimmage Virginia Tech Hokies

FLORENCE, S.C. (October 18, 2018) - The Florence-Darlington Technical College (FDTC) Stingers traveled to Blacksburg, Virginia on Wednesday to play a twelve-inning scrimmage against Virginia Tech.

While the Stingers have scrimmaged NCAA D1 teams before, the visit to Virginia Tech marked the first time that FDTC has ever played a team in the elite, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

Through the first six innings, the Stingers trailed 9-0. The scoreboard was cleared for the last six innings of the pre-season scrimmage, and the Stingers rebounded to outscore the Hokies 6-4. In the second half of the scrimmage, all six runs for the Stingers came in the top of the sixth inning. Returning outfielder, Michael Elijah and Alex Stennett had 2 RBI. Patrick Baggett had two hits as well.

“We really appreciate Coach John Szefc and Virginia Tech for hosting us,” said FDTC head baseball coach, Preston McDonald. “The area, campus and facilities were beautiful. It was a unique opportunity for our players and program to compete against an ACC team. With a fall scrimmage, both teams were mixing different lineups and got a bunch of different guys on the mound. To play well against a first-class program like Virginia Tech will be a big confidence booster moving forward for our players.”
