Tech Stingers Sweep USC Lancaster To Lead Region

FLORENCE, S.C. (April 8, 2019) – The Florence-Darlington Technical College Stingers swept USC Lancaster 1-0 and 7-3 on Saturday and 8-3 and 8-2 on Sunday at Sparrow Stadium to solidify the top spot in Region 10.

The first matchup of the four-game series came down to the final innings on Saturday. The Tech Stingers’ only run in the 1-0 win came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Patrick Baggett crossed home plate. Will Abbott won the game on the mound. Abbott lasted for the entire seven innings, striking out nine players and only allowing a hit. He had a no hitter in the final inning with two outs and two strikes before USC Lancaster got their first and only hit. Mark Engel led the way at the plate, as he was 2-for-3. Baggett had the team’s only other hit.

In Saturday’s second game, the Tech Stingers jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in the 7-3 victory. Boyce Kobleur was credited with the win as he lasted for six innings. Kobleur struck out nine batters and only allowed two hits and two runs. Nat Turner pitched the final inning in relief. Damond Nixon was 2-for-3 with a homerun and three RBI. Cameron Dean was 2-for-3 with a run. Baggett was 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run. Ryan Moore with one RBI and two runs and Edward Landron with an RBI and one run each had a hit.

To open Sunday, the Tech Stingers defeated USC Lancaster 8-3. Daniel Rutherford won the game on the mound. Rutherford pitched for four innings as he struck out seven batters and allowed five hits and a run. Nathan Barolet earned the save by recording the final five outs of the game. Engel led the way for the Tech Stingers at the plate as he went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Baggett with two RBI, Landron with one RBI, Dean and Hunter Baker had a hit.

The Tech Stingers kept the momentum rolling as they dominated to win 8-2 in the final game of the series on Sunday. Peyton Evans who went 3.1 innings got the win on the mound. Evans struck out a player and allowed five hits and two runs. The team amassed 10 hits throughout the game. Michael Elijah, Moore and Engel each had two hits. Baggett, Landron, Dean and Baker had a hit.

The Tech Stingers have now won 20 of their last 21 games. The last 10 wins have come consecutively. Over the weekend, the team improved to 33-9 overall and 13-3 in Region 10.

On Wednesday, the Tech Stingers will his Brunswick at Old Cormell Field. The game is set to get underway at 4 p.m.
