Welding Rodeo Crowns First-Time Winners

Both, the professional and student welding teams that competed in Florence-Darlington Technical College’s (FDTC) Eighth Annual Welding Rodeo on Saturday, April 8, 2017, are first-time winners. Frazier Industrial Company from Lamar and Heyward Career and Technology Center from Columbia won their respective divisions in the day-long contest at Francis Marion University’s Arts International Festival.

The FDTC Educational Foundation hosted the teams competing to see who could sculpt artwork that best represented this year’s theme of “automation.”  All of the teams came up with some kind of robot in just eight hours. SCATE Inc. and Lincoln Electric teamed up to provide cash prizes and welding equipment for the competitors.

The day began early with the teams running in a “scrap dive,” where they picked out their scrap metal to begin their creations. Eight hours later, a three-person team of judges picked the winners from the professional and student teams.  All of the artwork was then auctioned off to benefit scholarships at FDTC.
