Copyright infringement is the act of, without permission or legal authority, using or exercising one or more of the exclusive rights granted to the copyright owner under section 106 of the Copyright Act (Title 17 of the U.S. Code). In file-sharing content, down-loading or uploading substantial parts of a copyrighted work without authority constitutes infringement.

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act is a provision establishing limitation of liability for infringement of copyright laws by users of computing resources at institutions of higher education. In compliance with the rules of this act, Florence-Darlington Technical College has designated an agent to receive statutory notices from copyright owners about infringements and to send statutory notices to affected subscribers.
