FDTC’s Caviston Elected to SC State Assembly of Surgical Technologists Board
Florence-Darlington Tech (FDTC) Surgical Technology Program Director Marianne Caviston has been elected to serve a two-year term on the Board of Directors of the South Carolina State Assembly of the Association of Surgical Technologists (SCSA AST).
Caviston was elected during the SCSA AST Fall Workshop and Annual Business Meeting, held Sept. 26-27 at FDTC’s Southeastern Institute of Manufacturing and Technology (SIMT). She was one of three candidates elected to the State Assembly’s Board of Directors.
In addition to her new leadership role with SCSA AST, Caviston was selected as one of six delegates who will represent South Carolina at the Association of Surgical Technologists’ (AST) 2027 Surgical Technology Conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
“It is a privilege to work at FDTC and to have the opportunity to share my passion for surgical technology with the next generation of surgical technologists,” Caviston said. “It is an honor to have been elected to serve on the South Carolina State Assembly of AST Board of Directors and to represent South Carolina as a delegate at the 2027 AST National Conference in Milwaukee. I look forward to the opportunity to advocate for surgical technologists, support the continued advancement of our profession, and help prepare our students to become the future of surgical technology.”
The South Carolina State Assembly of AST provides surgical technologists with opportunities for professional growth through continuing education, legislation and professional networking. The organization’s mission is to advance the surgical technology profession while ultimately contributing to quality patient care.
Founded in 1969, the national Association of Surgical Technologists is the professional organization representing the interests of surgical technologists and surgical assistants. AST promotes education and professional standards, provides continuing education, supports state-level organizations and advocates for the advancement of the surgical technology profession. AST represents more than 80,000 practitioners nationwide.
Caviston has served as FDTC’s Surgical Technology Program Director since 2018 and brings more than 35 years of experience in perioperative healthcare and more than a decade of experience in surgical technology education to her role.
She is a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST), Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) and an ACUE Certified Educator. Earlier this year, Caviston was also named a Fellow of the Association of Surgical Technologists (F.A.S.T.), an honorary recognition for individuals who demonstrate high professional, ethical and moral standards and make significant contributions to advancing the surgical technology profession.
Through its national and state organizations, AST supports the continued development of surgical technology through education, professional standards, advocacy and resources designed to promote quality patient care.
Caviston’s election provides another opportunity for FDTC to contribute to the advancement of the surgical technology profession while bringing new professional knowledge and connections back to the college’s Surgical Technology Program and its students.
